Attractions in ManchesterSome of the city's public buildings and churches can make an interesting day out. Head for Albert Square in the city centre and take a look around Manchester Town Hall (0161 234 5000). It's a truly impressive example of Victorian architecture and it's free to get in although you'll have to check for weekend opening. The Royal Exchange (0161 834 3731), located just behind Selfridges houses the biggest room in the North of England where nearly 80% of the world trade in finished cloth was controlled at the end of the 19th century. Manchester Cathedral (0161 833 2220) opens every day from 8.30am. St Ann's Church (0161 834 0239) is open 11.30am to 5pm daily. The Manchester Art Gallery (0161 236 8888) has been recently refurbished and is free to get in as is The Cornerhouse (0161 200 1500) for contemporary art, The Chinese Arts Centre (0161 832 7271) for Chinese art and culture and Cube (0161 275 7450) which is a city buildings exhibition.
Manchester city hosts numerous concerts and has plenty of theatrical shows. The Manchester Opera House (0161 242 2509) is accustomed to grand performances and ticket sales can be less than you think. Manchester is well geared to compete with growing trend of Comedy Nights across the UK. Consider a visit to The Comedy Store (0161 839 9595), The Lowry (0161 876 2000), Bridgewater Hall (0161 907 9000) or The Palace Theatre (0161 228 6255) amongst others. For gigs and concerts try The Apollo (0161 242 2560) and MEN Arena (0161 930 8000) for big name bands or for something a bit smaller The Roadhouse (0161 237 9789) and Life Café (0161 833 3000) are often busy with live rock and Indie bands performing. Manchester's only dog racing venue is Belle Vue Dog Track (0161 223 8000). This makes for a fantastic night out! Behind the Printworks, you will be able to find The Hard Rock Casino which is quite chic but also practical with reasonably priced drinks. Urbis (0161 605 8200) is a massively impressive glass building located in the heart of the city. It houses an interesting city exhibition which looks at cities throughout the world. The Manchester United Museum (0870 442 1994) is a fascinating insight into the biggest football club in the world - whether you're a fan or not. |
