Llangollen places to visit

Take a picturesque walk along the river, browse Llangollen's many Welsh tourist and craft shops, take lunch or dinner on a canal barge, walk across John Trevor's bridge (a seven wonder of Wales), spend a day at Chirk Castle, drink beer at the Bridge End pub and mingle with the bikers on a hot day, watch steam railway locomotives come and go, hike up to Castell Dinas Bran, catch your breath and walk back down and then take a look around Valle Crucis Abbey. There is plenty to do in Llangollen and when the Eisteddfod comes to town, multiply this choice by ten and ensure you don't run out of time.

1795 Thomas Telford aqueduct

The Thomas Telford aqueduct is 126 feet high above the river Dee. It takes nerves of steel to walk across its narrow footpath. From the aqueduct can be seen the viaduct along with an occasional train which also crosses the Chirk valley. Back in the 13th Century Valle Crucis Abbey was a thriving monastery and time has taken its toll, reducing its striking medieval architecture to ruin but still leaving enough to make this a remarkable attraction. The 'Valley of the Cross' is a paying attraction between April and September and surprisingly is free during the winter months but as it will only set you back a couple of pounds, even more reason to take a look.

Ty Newydd

Castell Dinas Bran or 'Crow's Castle' as it is known locally overlooks the Vale of Llangollen and if you've got the energy for a good hill-walk, it offers stunning views of possibly the best Welsh landscape that you will ever see. There's no charge so take a picnic and make an afternoon of it!

Berwyn station Llangollen where steam railway locomotives charge by

Sitting along the banks of the River Dee and in the heart of Llangollen, the Llangollen Steam Railway is an insight into days gone by and even possibly when trains ran on time in Great Britain. It also continues a Llangollen theme with motoring and machinery museums that are near to the town.

Chirk Castle (01691 777701) is just a 15 minute drive from Llangollen and is one of the areas most prominent tourist attractions. The well-preserved castle is set in 6 acres of gardens and 500 acres of parkland.
